Unveiling the Soul of the Kaisika Nadagam

Abstract

The Kaisika Natakam is a unique ritual theatre tradition performed exclusively at the Thirukkurungudi temple in Tirunelveli district. In this, Nambaduvan, who belongs to a marginalized caste, undertakes the Ekadasi vow and, even when obstructed by the demon Somasarma, fulfills it without giving up. Beyond its mythological framework, this play highlights issues of caste, faith, truth, and salvation, thereby embedding social and spiritual messages within its ritualistic performance. This research paper examines the Kaisika Natakam both as a dramatic text and as a performance tradition. It analyses the process of revival and reconstruction undertaken in the late 20th century after the form had almost vanished, and explores the contributions of scholars, artists, and temple authorities in bringing it back to the stage. By documenting and critically analysing the Kaisika Natakam, the study not only preserves an endangered cultural heritage but also demonstrates how ritual theatre can function simultaneously as a site of devotion, aesthetic expression, and socio-cultural discourse.
