The tradition of the Tamils has historically viewed the land and its organisms not merely as utilitarian objects, but as relations inextricably bound to their own way of life. Since ancient times, a culture has prevailed among Tamils where every living being—from one-sensed organisms to five-sensed creatures—is considered as one’s own kin. This is evidenced by the practice of sharing food with birds and animals while eating, and involving them in festivities like Thai Thirunal (Pongal) by decorating them, thereby making them participants in human joy.
Beyond sharing happiness, Sangam literature records a high moral lifestyle where the suffering of non-human beings (Ahriṇai) was felt as one's own. This research paper provides an extensive analysis of the life of birds and animals as depicted in ancient literature—specifically in Kurunthogai, Narrinai, Akananuru, and Purananuru—within both biological and literary contexts. The primary objective of this study is to explain the behavioral patterns and lifestyles of non-human beings as portrayed in Sangam literature.
