Man is a social animal; he cannot live in isolation. In a social way of life where individuals depend on one another, ethical values serve as the linchpins that construct society. Purananuru, one of the Sangam literary works, is a historical casket that records the valor, philanthropy, politics, education, and social values of Tamils from over two thousand years ago. This article extensively analyzes the external life ethics revealed through the hymns of Purananuru.
Specifically, it discusses the trait of shared consumption (Paghuthunnum Panbu), a universal global outlook, the mindset of treating pleasure and pain equally, guidance toward the righteous path, gratitude, self-respect, humanitarian war ethics, and social duties. This research highlights how the life values expressed through the songs of scholars like Kaniyan Pungundranar, Nakkeerar, and Ponmudiyar serve as a guide even for the modern era.
