At the mere mention of Purananuru, our minds invariably conjure images of war. Yet, the glory attained through battle was considered a distinct code of conduct or virtue in itself. Padan Thinai, a specific poetic genre, was dedicated to extolling the ethical sensibilities and heroic virtues of the sung hero. Only those who demonstrated exceptional prowess in valor, warfare, and generosity were deemed worthy of such poetic praise. This research paper elucidates how the Sangam poets, while primarily focusing on kings and warriors, bequeathed a rich cultural heritage to human society through their literature. Beyond merely documenting the path for cultivating human virtues, they also embedded broader societal messages within this cultural tapestry.
புறநானூறு என்றவுடன் நமக்கு போர் நிகழ்வுகள் மட்டுமே காட்சியாக நினைவுக்கு வருகின்றது. போர் செய்ததன் வழியாகக் கிடைக்கப்பெறும் புகழ் என்பது மற்றுமொரு ஒழுக்கமாகும். பாடப்படும் ஆண்மகனின் ஒழுக்க உணர்வுகளை வெளிப்படுத்துவது பாடாண் திணையாகும். வீரத்திலும், போரிலும், ஈகையிலும் வல்லமை படைத்தவனாக இருப்பவனே பாடப்படும் தகுதியை உடையவனாக இருந்திருக்கின்றான். மன்னனையும்-வீரர்களையும் மையமாகக் கொண்டு பெரும் பண்பாட்டை இலக்கியமாக மனிதச் சமூகத்திற்குக் கொடையாக அளித்த சங்கப்புலவர்கள், மனிதப்பண்பை வளர்ப்பதற்கான பாதையைப் பதிவு செய்ததுடன் பண்பாட்டோடு சில பொதுவான செய்திகளையும் பதிவு செய்துள்ளனர் என்பதை இவ்வியல் விளக்கி நிற்கின்றது.
