The literature that emerged during the Sangam period, especially during the Middle Sangam and the Late Sangam periods, is called Sangam literature. The total number of songs that we have today, sung by the great poets of the Sangam period, who were grammatically competent and had the ability to explain, is 2381. As a result of searching for Sangam songs, what we have found is the collection of songs. In this, the eight books have created various internal songs based on the basics. Among these, Kalithok is one of the eight books that are famous for their merit. These songs composed by Kalippa have the special feature of being Kali that attracts the learned. It is the opinion of Tolkappiyar that Kalippa is the best for singing internal songs. Since Kalippa is like a drama song mixed with dialogue, it has great importance for love here. In this way, in Kalithok, the love traditions are revealed through the conversations of the leader, the leader, the companion. Through this love, we can also see the life of our ancient Tamils. It is also possible to see that the Dalit songs are mixed with the life of our Tamil people
சங்ககாலத்தில் கறிப்பாக இடைச்சங்க கடைச்சங்க காலத்தில் தோன்றிய இலக்கியங்களையே சங்க இலக்கியங்கள் என்கிறோம். இலக்கணச் செறிவும் விளக்கிய தகுதியும் உடையவர்களாகச் சங்க காலப் புலவர் பெருமக்களால் பாடப்பெற்ற வையாக இன்று நமக்கு கிடைக்கும் பாடல்கள் மொத்தம் 2381 ஆகும். சங்கப் பாடல்களை தேடியதன் விளைவாக நமக்கு கிடைத்தவை பாட்டும் தொகையும் ஆகும். இதில் எட்டுத்தொகை நூல்கள் பல்வேறு அகப்புறப் பாடல்களை அடிப்படைகளைக் கொண்டு உருவாக்க பெற்றுள்ளன. இதில் பாவினால் பெயர் பெற்ற எட்டுத்தொகை நூல்களுள் கலித்தொகையும் ஒன்றாகும். கலிப்பாவினால் இயற்றப்பட்டது இப்பாடல்களுக்கு கற்றோர் ஏத்தும் கலி என்ற சிறப்பு உண்டு. அகப் பாடல்களை பாடுவதற்கு கலிப்பாவே சிறந்தது என்பது தொல்காப்பியரின் கருத்தாகும். கலிப்பா என்பதில் உரையாடல் கலந்த நாடக பாடல் போல அமைந்துள்ளதால் இங்கே காதலுக்கு மிகுந்த சிறப்பை பெற்றுள்ளது இவ்வகையிலே கலித்தொகையில் தலைவன் தலைவி தோழி இவர்களின் உரையாடல்கள் வழியாக காதல் மரபுகள் புலப்படுகின்றன. இக் காதலின் வழியாக நம் பண்டைய தமிழரின் வாழ்வியலையும் காண முடிகிறது. தலித் தொகை நம் தமிழ் மக்களின் வாழ்வியலோடு ஒன்றாக கலந்துள்ளன என்பதையும் அறிய முடிகிறது.
