Abstract

To understand the lifestyle of the people during the Sangam period, Sangam literature greatly assists us. Sangam literature clearly depicts various aspects such as the daily habits of the people of that era, their professions, key features of their culture, and developments in fields like education, economy, and art. As conveyed by the lines, "The world with its blooming flowers thrives because of the king," the lives of the people of that era were largely dependent on the king. The king's rule and his actions directly impacted the lives of the people. The Puram poems in Sangam literature, especially those focusing on kings and chieftains, serve as a mirror reflecting the lives of the people of that time. These poems primarily speak of the kings' valorous deeds, their generosity, their martial prowess, and their perspective on the people. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to bring forth information about the external life (i.e., outward aspects like politics, economy, society, warfare) of the Sangam period people through these Puram poems. Through this, we can gain a deeper understanding of an important period in our ancient civilization.

சங்க கால மக்களின் வாழ்க்கை முறையைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள, சங்க இலக்கியங்கள் நமக்கு மிகப்பெரிய உதவியைச் செய்கின்றன. அக்கால மக்களின் தினசரி பழக்கவழக்கங்கள், அவர்களுடைய தொழில்கள், பண்பாட்டின் முக்கிய அம்சங்கள், கல்வி, பொருளாதாரம், கலை போன்ற பல்வேறு துறைகளில் ஏற்பட்ட வளர்ச்சிகள் என எல்லாவற்றையும் சங்க இலக்கியங்கள் தெளிவாகப் படம்பிடித்துக் காட்டுகின்றன. "மன்னன் உயிர்த்தே மலர்தலை உலகம்" என்ற வரிகள் உணர்த்துவது போல, அக்கால மக்களின் வாழ்வியல் பெரும்பாலும் மன்னனைச் சார்ந்தே அமைந்திருந்தது. மன்னனின் ஆட்சியும், அவனது செயல்களுமே மக்களின் வாழ்க்கையை நேரடியாகப் பாதித்தன. சங்க இலக்கியங்களில் இடம்பெறும் புறப்பாடல்கள், குறிப்பாக மன்னர்களையும் குறுநில மன்னர்களையும் மையமாகக் கொண்ட பாடல்கள், அக்கால மக்களின் வாழ்க்கையைப் பிரதிபலிக்கும் கண்ணாடியாகத் திகழ்கின்றன. இந்தப் பாடல்கள் பெரும்பாலும் மன்னர்களின் வீரதீரச் செயல்கள், அவர்களின் கொடைத்திறன், போர்த்திறன், மக்களின் மீதான அவர்களின் பார்வை ஆகியவற்றைப் பேசுகின்றன. எனவே, இந்தப் புறப்பாடல்கள் மூலம் சங்க கால மக்களின் புறவாழ்வின் (அதாவது, அரசியல், பொருளாதாரம், சமூகம், போர் போன்ற வெளித்தோற்றமான அம்சங்கள்) செய்திகளை வெளிக்கொணர்வதே இந்த ஆய்வின் முக்கிய நோக்கமாகும். இதன் மூலம், நாம் நம்முடைய பண்டைய நாகரிகத்தின் ஒரு முக்கியமான காலகட்டத்தைப் பற்றி ஆழமாகப் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியும்.
