Hill Dwellers in Kurunthogai

Abstract

This paper analyzes the domestic life and ethical framework of the hill-dwelling community (Kuravar) as portrayed in the Kurinci (mountain region) poems within the Sangam literature anthology, Kurunthogai. Recognizing that literature serves as a mirror reflecting the contemporary society, this study focuses on specific verses that illustrate the deep, affectionate, and virtuous relationship (Illaram) between the hero and heroine of the mountain lands. The analysis highlights that their marital union was founded solely on mutual, intense love and affection (Anbu) rather than pre-existing kinship, as exemplified by the famous verse, "Yāyum Nyāyum yār āgiyaro..." (Kurunthogai 40). Furthermore, the study examines the cultural ideals of compromise, eternal fidelity across lifetimes, and the emotional resilience shown during necessary separation (for seeking wealth or fulfilling duty), ultimately concluding that the Kurinci poems in Kurunthogai articulate a profound and sublime ethical standard of love and commitment among the hill dwellers.

இக்கட்டுரையானது சங்க இலக்கியமான குறுந்தொகையில் உள்ள குறிஞ்சித் திணைப் பாடல்கள் வாயிலாக மலைவாழ் மக்களின் வாழ்வியல் மற்றும் அறநெறிகளை ஆராய்கிறது. இலக்கியம் ஒரு காலத்தின் சமுதாயத்தைப் பிரதிபலிக்கும் கண்ணாடியாகும் என்ற கருத்தின் அடிப்படையில், குறுந்தொகையிலுள்ள 401 பாடல்களில் வரும் குறிஞ்சித் திணைப் பாடல்கள் இக்கட்டுரைக்காக ஆய்வு செய்யப்பட்டன. இவர்களின் இல்லற (Domestic Life) வாழ்க்கை அன்பு, காதல், மற்றும் அறம் சார்ந்த வாழ்வாக அமைந்துள்ளது கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளது. குறிப்பாக, தலைவன் தலைவி உறவு என்பது இரத்த உறவுகளைக் கடந்து, செம்புலப் பெயல் நீர் போல அன்புடைய நெஞ்சங்கள் தாமே ஒன்றுபடுவதன் மூலம் உருவாகிறது. பிரிவின்றி வாழ்தல், விட்டுக்கொடுத்தல், மற்றும் மறுபிறவி தோறும் தொடரும் காதல் ஆகியவற்றின் மூலம் தலைவன் தலைவியின் பிணைப்பின் (Commitment) ஆழம் விளக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. குறுந்தொகையில் மலைவாழ் மக்களின் ஆழமான காதலும் அறமும் ஒரு உயர்ந்த வாழ்வியல் தரத்தை நிலைநிறுத்துகிறது.
