Abstract

The Azhagar Temple, located in Madurai, southern Tamil Nadu, stands as an important symbol of the spiritual, cultural, and literary heritage of the Tamils. Azhagar, also known as Sundararaja Perumal, is revered as one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. From Sangam literature to Bhakti literature, this temple and its deity have been frequently mentioned. Works such as Silappathikaram, Perumpanarruppadai, Nalayira Divya Prabandham, and the hymns of the Alvars repeatedly praise the glory of Azhagar and the significance of the temple. Notably, the Madurai Azhagar festival reflects the cultural unity and devotional spirit of Tamil society
