Iniyavai Narpathu, one of the classical Tamil ethical texts, delves into the profound principles of friendship. This treatise illuminates the virtues of companionship, the discerning judgment of scholars, and the dangers of befriending malevolent individuals. It emphasizes that true friendship must be nurtured with wisdom—choosing the learned as allies, avoiding those devoid of compassion, and never speaking ill of a friend. The text warns that abandoning a true friend leads to suffering, while steadfast companionship remains an unwavering support in all circumstances. It also explores themes of generosity, loyalty, and the moral obligations between friends. The treatise succinctly captures the essence of virtuous friendships—relationships that endure beyond fleeting hardships and selfish gains.

Through metaphors and ethical maxims, Iniyavai Narpathu guides readers in distinguishing genuine bonds from superficial ones. Phrases like "Thērin ārāyndhu pārthān thisaikkuthān" ("One must carefully examine the path before walking it") highlight the need for prudence in choosing companions.
