The Micro-Implications of Postmodern Discourses in Diaspora Literary Fictions: A Study of Eelam Tamil Poetry and Prose

Abstract

This study integrates postmodern theories within the framework of diaspora literature, specifically establishing how these theoretical elements subtly reflect the lived experiences, profound cultural shifts, and the fragmentation of identity adopted by the displaced in their new environments. The analysis focuses particularly on the poetry and prose fiction generated subsequent to the forced displacement of Eelam Tamils. The paper examines the deep-seated characteristics found in Eelam diaspora literature in conjunction with the defining features of postmodernism: namely, aggressive multiplicity, decentering, heightened self-awareness, and emphasis on marginality. The postmodern rejection of universal truth and its inherent impulse to question established structures of power and knowledge offer a crucial ideological platform. This framework enables diasporic writers to fearlessly and authentically challenge centralized authority, which often contributed to their initial displacement. Ultimately, this research concludes that Eelam diaspora literature utilizes the postmodern lens to reflect the collapse of the grand narrative of national liberation and the harsh reality of forced migration. A key strategic move identified is the questioning of modernism’s human-centered focus. This is achieved through the elevation of the suffering of non-human or inanimate objects to the status of a marginalized element, thereby highlighting a broader, decentered ontology of pain and loss within the displacement experience. 

இந்த ஆய்வு, புலம்பெயர்ந்த மனிதர்கள் படைக்கும் இலக்கியப் படைப்புகளின் (Diaspora literature) சட்டகத்துக்குள் பின்நவீனத்துவக் (Postmodernism) கோட்பாடுகளைப் பொருத்தி ஆய்வதுடன், இந்தக் கோட்பாட்டுக் கூறுகள் எவ்வாறு புலம்பெயர்ந்தோரின் வாழ்வனுபவங்கள், கலாச்சார மாற்றங்கள் மற்றும் புதிய வாழ்வில் கைக்கொண்ட அடையாளச் சிதைவுகள் ஆகியவற்றை நுட்பமாகப் பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன என்பதை நிறுவுகிறது.¹ குறிப்பாக, ஈழத்தமிழர்களின் கட்டாய இடம்பெயர்வு சார்ந்து உருவான கவிதைகளையும் புனைகதைகளையும் மையமாகக் கொண்டு பகுப்பாய்வு செய்யப்படுகிறது. இக்கட்டுரை பின்நவீனத்துவத்தின் ஆதிக்கமிகு பன்முகத்தன்மை, மையமற்ற தன்மைகள், சுய-விழிப்புணர்வு, மற்றும் விளிம்புநிலைக் கூறுகள் ஆகியவற்றுடன் புலம்பெயர் இலக்கியங்களில் தட்டுப்படும் ஆழ்ந்த பண்புகளை ஆராய்கிறது.¹ பின்நவீனத்துவவாதிகள் முன்வைக்கும் முழு உண்மையின் நிராகரிப்பு, அதிகாரம்/அறிவின் கட்டமைப்புகளைக் கேள்விக்குள்ளாக்குதல் ஆகிய போக்குகள், புலம்பெயர்ச் சூழலில் இருந்து எழுதும் எழுத்தாளர்களுக்கு பாசங்கற்ற முறையில் (அச்சமின்றி) மையப்படுத்தப்பட்ட அதிகாரத்தைக் கேள்வி கேட்க ஒரு கருத்தியல் தளத்தை வழங்கியுள்ளது.² இறுதியாக, ஈழப் புலம்பெயர் இலக்கியமானது, ஒரு பெரும் தேசிய விடுதலைக்கான பெருங்கதையாடலின் சிதைவையும், கட்டாய இடம்பெயர்வு எனும் யதார்த்தத்தையும் பின்நவீனத்துவச் சட்டகத்தில் பொருத்தி, மனிதனுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்ட அஃறிணைப் பொருட்களின் துயரத்தைக் கூட விளிம்புநிலைக் கூறாக முன்வைத்து, நவீனத்துவத்தின் மனித மையத்தைக் கேள்விக்குள்ளாக்கும் உத்தியைக் கையாள்கிறது என இந்த ஆய்வு முடிவு செய்கிறது.
