A Tamil Socio-Historical Perspective through Sangam Literature: The Evolution of Land, Governance, and Social Dimensions

Abstract

Sangam literature (c. 500 BCE – 300 CE) stands as a foundational source, illuminating the lifestyle, cultural traditions, social relations, political structures, and economic conditions of ancient Tamil society. This study analyzes the Sangam-era social organization, which was intrinsically linked to nature, through the lens of the Aintinai concept (fivefold division of land). It explains how people's occupations, diet, attire, and ethical frameworks were determined by the inherent characteristics of their land, and elucidates the period when agriculture (specifically in the Marutham region) became the backbone of the economy.

Concerning administrative structures, the research posits that this society gradually evolved from a cooperative system of Manrams (councils) guided by clan chiefs, to the more institutionalized administrative bodies like the Aimperum Kulu (Council of Five) and Enperayam (Council of Eight) observed during the Silappathikaram era. While urbanization, exemplified by flourishing centers like Puhar, prospered due to agricultural wealth and robust trade, Sangam poems subtly document the emergence of economic disparities and moral decline (such as 'streets of courtesans') within society. Finally, the study illuminates the heroic traditions of Sangam society through its emphasis on valor, honor, and ritualistic warfare practices, including the symbolic felling of the kaval maram (guardian tree). Ultimately, this research seeks to establish Sangam literature as invaluable social, cultural, and historical archives of Tamil civilization.
