Domestic Life and Social Ethos in Kuruntokai: An Analysis of the Threefold Principle (Mupporul) Governing Sangam Tamil Society

Abstract

This study undertakes a profound investigation into the internal (Akam – domestic life) and external (Puram – social life) components of Sangam-era Tamil existence, as vividly captured in Kuruntokai, a classic text often lauded as the ‘Good Kuruntokai’ among the Eṭṭuttokai (Eight Anthologies). The analysis is grounded in the deep-seated aesthetic conventions and theories outlined in the ancient grammatical treatise, Tolkāppiyam. Sangam literature masterfully serves the noble purpose of documenting human life in its entirety. As an Akapporuḷ (love genre) text composed in the Ahaval meter, Kuruntokai is examined here to illustrate how the core anthropological principle—the Threefold Doctrine (Mupporul), comprising the First Matter (Mudal Porul), the Dependent Matter (Karu Porul), and the Thematic Matter (Uri Porul)—established the distinct structure of Tamil society through the ethical framework of the Five Landscapes (Aintinai). Specifically, this article critically analyzes how vocational life (agriculture, fishing), economic exchange (barter system), family ethics (domestic virtue, hospitality – Virundhombal), and challenging social issues (separation of lovers for the pursuit of wealth – Porul Vayir Pirithal, and infidelity – Parattaimāi) are expressed within the Kuruntokai verses. Emphasis is placed on decoding the sophisticated literary aesthetics employed, such as Uḷḷuṟai (inner hidden metaphor) and Iraicci (suggestive meaning/poetic implication). The primary objective of this research is to establish that the life principles and ethical conduct of the Tamils were not merely a randomized collection of events, but rather a robust, integrated ethical policy meticulously structured in harmony with the surrounding geographical and environmental layout. 

இக்கட்டுரை எட்டுத்தொகை நூல்களுள் 'நல்ல குறுந்தொகை' எனப் பாராட்டப்படும் குறுந்தொகையில் படம்பிடித்துக் காட்டப்படும் சங்க காலத் தமிழரின் அக மற்றும் புற வாழ்வியல் கூறுகளை, தொல்காப்பியப் பூடகவியலின் அடிப்படையில் ஆழமாக ஆராய்கிறது. சங்க இலக்கியங்கள் மனித வாழ்வினைப் படம் பிடித்துக் காட்டும் உன்னதப் பணியை மேற்கொள்கின்றன. குறுந்தொகை அகவற்பாவால் அமைந்த ஓர் அகப்பொருள் பனுவலாக விளங்கி, முப்பொருள் கோட்பாடான முதல், கரு, உரிப் பொருள்கள் எவ்வாறு ஐந்திணை ஒழுக்கத்தின் வழியே தமிழர் வாழ்வியல் அமைப்பை நிலைநிறுத்தின என்பதை ஆய்வு செய்கிறது. குறிப்பாக, தொழில் சார்ந்த வாழ்வியல் (உழவு, மீன்பிடிப்பு) , பொருளாதாரப் பரிமாற்றம் (பண்ட மாற்று) , குடும்ப அறம் (இல்வாழ்க்கை, விருந்தோம்பல்) , மற்றும் சமுதாயச் சிக்கல்கள் (பொருள் வயிற் பிரிதல், பரத்தமை) ஆகியவை குறுந்தொகைப் பாடல்களில் எத்தகைய நுண்ணிய அழகியல் (உள்ளுறை, இறைச்சி) மூலம் வெளிப்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன என்பதைத் திறனாய்வு செய்கிறது. தமிழரின் வாழ்வியல் நெறிகள், வெறுமனே நிகழ்வுகளின் தொகுப்பல்லாமல், நிலவியல் அமைப்போடு இணைந்த அறவியல் கொள்கையாக எவ்வாறு கட்டமைக்கப்பட்டன என்பதை நிறுவுவதே இவ்வாய்வின் பிரதான நோக்கம் ஆகும்.
