The Hidden Faith: Beliefs and Rituals in the Poetic World of Akanāṉūṟu

Abstract

The poems found in *Akanāṉūṟu*, a work of Sangam literature, vividly portray the inner (akam) life of the ancient Tamil people. These poems reveal not only human emotions such as love, separation, waiting, and lamentation, but also the social beliefs and ritual practices that surround them. The natural symbols associated with the landscapes—Mullai, Kurinji, Marutham, and Neithal—are linked to beliefs involving divine worship, dreams, omens, curses, vows, and assurances. The rituals surrounding love—such as marital customs, prayers to deities, and affirmations of commitment made through the confidante—reflect the cultural order and social norms of that period. Thus, the poems of *Akanāṉūṟu* serve not merely as literary records but as social documents that depict the spiritual beliefs, life rituals, and cultural identity of the Sangam-age society.

அகநானூறு சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் இடம்பெறும் பாடல்கள் தமிழர் சமூகத்தின் அகத்திணை வாழ்க்கையை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன. இப்பாடல்களில் காதல், பிரிவு, காத்திருப்பு, புலம்பல் போன்ற மனித உணர்ச்சிகள் மட்டுமல்லாது, அவற்றைச் சுற்றிய சமூக நம்பிக்கைகள் மற்றும் சடங்கு முறைகளும் தெளிவாகக் காணப்படுகின்றன. பாடல்களில் காணப்படும் இயற்கைச் சின்னங்கள் (முல்லை, குறிஞ்சி, மருதம், நெய்தல்) தெய்வ வழிபாடு, கனவுகள், முன்னறிவிப்பு, சாபம், வாக்குறுதி, உறுதி முதலான நம்பிக்கைகளுடன் தொடர்புபடுத்தப்படுகின்றன. காதல் நிகழ்வுகளைச் சூழ்ந்த சடங்குகள்—மணநெறி, தெய்வத்திடம் வேண்டுதல், தோழியினூடாக உறுதி நிலைபேறு செய்யும் வழக்கம் போன்றவை—அந்தக் காலத்து பண்பாட்டு ஒழுங்கையும், சமூக வாழ்க்கை நெறிகளையும் உணர்த்துகின்றன. இதன் மூலம் அகநானூறு பாடல்கள் வெறும் இலக்கியப் பதிவாக இல்லாமல், சங்ககால சமூகத்தின் ஆன்மீக நம்பிக்கைகள், வாழ்க்கைச் சடங்குகள் மற்றும் பண்பாட்டு அடையாளங்களைச் சித்தரிக்கும் ஒரு சமூக ஆவணமாக விளங்குகின்றன.
