Social Thought in Kalaignar's Letters

Abstract

In the socio-political history of Tamil Nadu, Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi's morning letters, famously titled 'Udanpirappe' (My Dear Sibling/Kin), created a unique literary and political impact. These letters did not merely function as a medium for conveying party news; rather, they evolved into a powerful tool for deeply instilling the core ideologies of the Dravidian movement, particularly social reform philosophies, in the minds of the grassroots cadres. Through these letters, he put forth over fifteen significant social objectives, such as living in unity for the betterment of society, working tirelessly, shunning violence, engaging in public service with Tamil consciousness, journeying on the path of rationalism, and creating a society free from dominance, all with the aim of fostering a collective sense of purpose. This research paper extensively explores the central threads of Kalaignar's social thought as described in the original document. Specifically, it analyzes how he crafted intricate philosophies such as political tolerance (தீமைக்குத் தீமை செய்யாதே – Do not repay evil with evil), practical social justice (ஆலயச் சீர்திருத்தம் – Temple reforms), and the spirit of sacrifice (விழுப்புண்படாத நாள் வீணான நாளே! – A day without a battle-scar is a wasted day!) to establish his political ideals. The central argument of this study is that his letters not only outlined codes of conduct for cadres but also endured as a collection of socio-political philosophical principles guiding society to uphold justice, establish equality, and foster a society free from domination.

தமிழ்நாட்டின் சமூக அரசியல் வரலாற்றில், கலைஞர் மு. கருணாநிதி அவர்கள் தன்னுடைய ‘உடன்பிறப்பே’ எனும் தலைப்பிலான காலைக் கடிதங்கள் மூலம் ஏற்படுத்திய தாக்கம் ஒரு தனித்துவமான இலக்கிய மற்றும் அரசியல் வடிவமாகும். இக்கடிதங்கள் வெறும் இயக்கச் செய்திகளைப் பரிமாறும் ஊடகமாகச் செயல்படாமல், திராவிட இயக்கத்தின் மையச் சித்தாந்தங்களை, குறிப்பாகச் சமூகச் சீர்திருத்தச் சிந்தனைகளை, அடித்தட்டுத் தொண்டர்களின் மனதில் ஆழமாகப் பதிய வைக்கும் கருவியாகப் பரிணமித்தன. இக்கடிதங்கள் மூலம் அவர் சமுதாயம் நல்வளர்ச்சி அடைய ஒற்றுமையுடன் வாழுதல், ஓய்வின்றிப் பணி செய்தல், வன்முறையை விலக்குதல், தமிழுணர்வுடன் பொதுப்பணியாற்றுதல், பகுத்தறிவுப் பாதையில் பயணித்தல், ஆதிக்கமற்ற சமுதாயத்தை உருவாக்குதல் போன்ற பதினைந்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட முக்கியச் சமூக இலக்குகளைப் பொதுப்பற்றைத் தூண்டும் நோக்குடன் முன்வைத்தார்.
