Innovations in Scientific Discoveries in the Short Stories of Antanoor Suran

Abstract

This research paper primarily aims to analyze the contribution of Andanoor Sura to the contemporary world of the Tamil short story and the novelty of the scientific discoveries embedded within his works. Specifically, it examines the short stories ‘Sivvaga Panthu' (The Rectangular Ball), 'Thodarbhu Ellaikku Ullae' (Within Communication Range), 'Poongothaikku Karpu Undu' (Poongothai Has Chastity), and 'Sivappu Maathirai' (The Red Tablet), which are found in his collections 'Thadukkai’ (Obstruction/Barrier) and ‘Thira’ (Open/Door). Through these short stories, the author has presciently depicted—as both scientific discoveries and social innovations—the concepts of the mobile phone, high-functioning robots, the intricate operations of the internet, the human tendency to consume pills even for common contemporary health issues (such as digestive disorders and flatulence), and special tablets designed to control women’s hormonal balance. The research abstract of this paper is that these fictional elements serve as a continuation of scientific thought found in ancient Tamil literature, raising awareness about the changes occurring in modern society and the future impact science is poised to create.
