The Art of Simile in Thirukkural for Conveying Life Principles: A Multifaceted Analysis from the Perspective of Thandiyalankaram

Abstract

Thirukkural, authored by Thiruvalluvar, stands as the pinnacle treasury of wisdom in Tamil literature and a universal scripture [1]. To convey complex life philosophies and ethical principles simply and accessibly to all, Thiruvalluvar has effectively employed numerous similes [1]. His unique ability to connect life's truths with everyday natural imagery is what lends a distinctive quality to the art of simile in Thirukkural [1]. This study analyzes the key similes employed in Thirukkural based on the three types of comparison – characteristic (Paanbu), action (Thozhil), and effect (Payan) – as defined by Thandiyalankaram, the foremost treatise on Tamil rhetoric. Through this, it is elucidated to what extent Thiruvalluvar has strategically employed effect-based similes (Payan Uvamai) to establish his ethical philosophies. The objective of this report is to establish that the similes he used to reinforce life values such as patience, love, self-respect, and strength serve as a hallmark of literary richness.
