Nayuruvi (Achyranthes aspera): Traditional Medicinal Insights in Siddha – A Comparative Study through Siddhar Wisdom

Abstract

The herb Nayuruvi (Achyranthes aspera) has long been considered significant in the traditional medical systems of South India, particularly in Siddha medicine. Siddha medical texts have extensively documented its use in various disease conditions. Prominent among these are anti-inflammatory effects, management of urinary tract infections, intestinal purification, body detoxification, and relief from joint pain. The primary objective of this article is to present the insightful theories of the Siddhars regarding the traditional applications of Nayuruvi. To this end, information from ancient Siddha texts by masters such as Agathiyar and Bogar—detailing the plant's intrinsic qualities (taste, potency), beneficial constituents, recommended dosages, and various application methods (decoctions, ointments, powders)—is systematically analyzed. Subsequently, these traditional insights are compared with modern botanical identification and the results of pharmacological studies. This comparative analysis critically examines how modern science either substantiates or sheds light upon the wisdom of the Siddhars. Ultimately, in light of modern evidence, Nayuruvi is affirmed as a multifaceted medicinal herb with significant therapeutic value in Siddha medicine.
