In the Mahabharata, the grand epic of Hindu mythology, Kripacharya stands as the preceptor of the Kuru dynasty and the embodiment of impartiality and justice. Often considered an aspect of Brahma, he is one of the eight Chiranjeevis (immortals) alongside Ashwatthama, Bali, Vyasa, Hanuman, Vibhishana, and Parashurama. Born of the seed of Sage Sharadvan—an Ayoni (non-womb) birth—he was raised by King Shantanu and eventually became the royal teacher of the Kuru princes.
The Foundations of Immortality
This research paper views Kripacharya's immortality not merely as a mythological event but explores its deep philosophical roots. According to the Mahabharata, Kripacharya is an incarnation of Vishkambha, one of the eleven Rudras. Pleased by his intense penance directed toward Lord Vishnu, the Lord granted him a lifespan lasting until the end of the Kalpa (the end of the world cycle) and the prestigious position of being one of the Saptarishis (Seven Sages) in the next Manvantara.
Philosophical Significance and Attributes
The uniqueness of Kripacharya’s immortality lies in it being a reward for his core virtues: Neutrality, Justice, and Equality. * The Meaning of 'Kripa': His name, which signifies "mercy" or "grace," reflects his character. Just as King Shantanu raised him out of Kripa (compassion), he received immortality through the Kripa (grace) of Vishnu.
• Impartiality: Despite fighting on the side of the Kauravas during the Great War, his integrity was so absolute that Yudhishthira later appointed him as the preceptor for Parikshit. This act serves as a supreme validation of his neutrality.
Presence Across Ages
The Bhagavata Purana mentions that at the beginning of the Kali Yuga, Kripacharya resides in his ashram. His transition from a royal teacher to a future member of the Saptarishis represents a higher dimension of immortality—a transition from worldly duty to eternal cosmic guardianship.
