Abstract

Short story literature holds a unique place in the modern development journey of Tamil literature. The short story possesses the power to briefly and intensely express the subtle experiences of human life, social transformations, and the complexities of family relationships. Migrations driven by globalization and economic factors have given rise to a new theoretical framework in the landscape of Tamil literature called 'Diaspora Literature'.

Tha. Nirmaladevi, a writer living in Kuwait, has transformed the lifestyle and contemporary social issues of Gulf Tamils into literary records through her short story collection "Thedal" (Search) (2024, Pustaka Publications). Focusing on two short stories, "Thedal" (Search) and "Payanam" (Journey), from this collection, this paper comprehensively analyzes the writer's storytelling techniques, character design, reflection of social reality, and the psychological struggles of Gulf diaspora life. Furthermore, it evaluates Tha. Nirmaladevi's creativity by comparing the awareness of social security, economic planning, and the nuances of human relationships expressed in these stories with classical ethical literature and contemporary literary trends.
