Abstract

Literature arises from social life, hence a significant portion of literature becomes a portrayal of society. Whatever way of life and customs a society possesses, those are also recorded in literature. Therefore, the life of a society during a specific period can be understood through the literature that emerged during that period. In this regard, this essay aims to explore the concept of progeny (children) as depicted in Aingurunuru, how gender preference operated in progeny, and the societal background for this.

இலக்கியம் சமுதாய வாழ்க்கையிலிருந்து தோன்றுவதால் இலக்கியத்தின் பெரும்பகுதி சமுதாயச் சித்தரிப்பாய் அமைந்து விடுகின்றது. ஒரு சமுதாயம் எத்தகைய வாழ்வியலை ஒழுகலாறுகளைக் கொண்டுள்ளதோ அவையே இலக்கியத்திலேயும் பதிவு செய்யப்படுகின்றன. எனவே ஒரு சமுதாயத்தின் குறிப்பிட்ட காலகட்டத்திய வாழ்க்கையை அக்காலக் கட்டத்தில் தோன்றிய இலக்கியத்தின் வாயிலாகக் கண்டடைய முடியும். இந்த வகையில் ஐங்குறுநூறு காட்டும்  மக்கட்பேறு குறித்தும் மக்கட்பேற்றில் பாலின விருப்பு எப்படித் தொழிற்பட்டிருந்தது என்பது குறித்தும் இதற்கான சமுதாயப் பின்னணி குறித்தும் ஆராய்வதாக இக்கட்டுரை அமைகின்றது.
