Abstract

This article explores the manifestation of feminist ideologies (Peṇṇiyac cintanaikaḷ) within S. Ramakrishnan’s prominent contemporary Tamil novel, Idakkai (The Left Hand). Historically, the dynamic between genders has been marked by inherent hierarchies, positioning women in roles of traditional dependence—relying sequentially on parents, husbands, and children. The study first contextualizes feminism as a critical movement designed to understand and dismantle these gendered complexities and discriminatory power structures, drawing upon established definitions that highlight the struggle against gender-based suffering. While women have achieved considerable success in modern fields, the influence of inherited patriarchal authority continues to limit their social mobility and status. Utilizing the socio-political arguments of pioneering reformists like Periyar (E.V. Ramasamy), who advocated for women's agency beyond domestic servitude, this paper analyzes the specific depiction of female characters and their social station within the narrative landscape of Idakkai. The central objective is to assess how S. Ramakrishnan’s work portrays women’s struggles for equality, autonomy, and socio-economic elevation in line with contemporary feminist demands.
