Abstract

Prapanchan (பிரபஞ்சன்) stands as a prominent figure and significant contributor to the landscape of modern Tamil literature. His short stories are particularly noted for their profound social awareness and their keen sensitivity to the emotional and historical currents of their time.This paper undertakes an analytical study of Prapanchan's short stories, specifically examining how he intricately portrays and critically engages with key societal concepts. The focus will be on themes such as gender, gender distinctions, gender politics, the institution of marriage and family structures, the prevailing societal perceptions of women, and the evolving role of the 'modern woman'. By exploring these narratives, this research aims to uncover Prapanchan's unique perspective and his critical commentary on the social fabric of his era as reflected through these vital issues.
