A Comparative Analysis of Kaikkilai and Peruntinai Concepts in the Novel Karuppu Annam

Abstract

Saa. Devadas's translation of Thomas Mann’s German book, The Black Swan, into the Tamil novel Karuppu Annam, deeply looks at what it means to age, want things, and be a woman in society and in your head. It tells the story of a 50 year old widow who feels young again, which causes her a lot of emotional trouble. The book also shows how complicated things can get between a mother and daughter, and it points out how society sees older women who date. This paper looks at how the old Tamil ideas of Kaikkilai and Peruntinai fit into and work with the story. By comparing these ideas to the book, we can see how they give us a better understanding of the feelings, thoughts, and culture in Karuppu Annam. What we find shows that Tamil literary theory is still important for understanding new stories and the lives of women today.

கருப்பு அன்னம் நாவலின் ஆசிரியர் சா. தேவதாஸ் ஆவார். ஜெர்மன் மொழியில் தாமஸ் மன் என்பவர் எழுதிய 'The Black Swan' என்பதைத் தமிழில் கருப்பு அன்னம் என்று சா. தேவதாஸ் மொழிபெயர்த்துள்ளார். இந்நாவலில் கணவனை இழந்த ஐம்பது வயதுடைய ஒரு விதவைப் பெண் தன்னை ஐம்பது வயதிலும் இளமையாக உணர்வதால்  உளவியல் ரீதியிலான சிக்கல் ஏற்படுகிறது. அதிலிருந்து எப்படி தன் வாழ்க்கையைக் கட்டமைக்கின்றாள் என்பதையும் ஒரு தாய்க்கும் மகளுக்கும் நடைபெறும் உரையாடலையும்  வயதான பெண் காதலிப்பதால் சமூகம் அவளைப் பார்க்கும் விதத்தையும் இந்த நாவல் எடுத்தியம்புகின்றது. தமிழில் கைக்கிளை மற்றும் பெருந்திணை அக இலக்கணத்தில் இடம் பெறுகின்றது. கருப்பு அன்னம் நாவிலில் கைக்கிளை மற்றும் பெருந்திணைக் கோட்பாடுகள் எவ்வாறு பொருந்துகின்றன என்பதை ஒப்பிட்டு ஆய்வதே இக்கட்டுரையின் நோக்கமாகும்.
