தொன்மகாலத் தமிழர்களின் பழக்கவழக்கங்கள் இன்றையப் பார்வையில் Customs Of Ancient Tamils From Today’s Perspective
D. Sumathi Ph.D. Research Scholar of Tamil, Reg. No. PUAJ230360827, Kandaswami Kandar’s College, Namakkal, Affiliated to Periyar University, Tamil Nadu, India India , Dr. R. Vimalraj IndiaThe lifestyle and customs of Ancient Tamils are intertwined. Through literature, Tolkappiyam inscriptions and archaeological discoveries, the Tamil lifestyle, food habits, social norms, clothing family organizations, cultural festivals and other customs are clearly visible. This study examines whether those traditional practices are being maintained and given importance in the contemporary urban environment
The customes of Ancient times have gradually started to disappear in the name of civilization. The benefits of joint family life, thoughts on the decline in attention to natural food, the decline in interest in cultural clothes and traditional jewellery among the people, the decline in awareness of the rituals of festivals, etc. Are being affected by urbanization in the name of civilization, but today we see those rebirth in many places. The combination of antiquity and modernity help us to know our cultural identities again.
This essay examines the grammatical evidence that underpins ancient customs and practices and shows how thes are relevant to today’s young generation. It also attempts to reveal the value of mythology and it’s modern uses.

K. Rajasrinivasan Research Scholar, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, 608002 India , Dr. A. Ganesan Professor, P.S.P.T. M.G.R. Government Arts and Science College, Sirkazhi, Puthoor- 609 108 IndiaIn the Akattinai tradition (love poetry), a sub-division of the unique Tamil literary grammar of Porul Ilakkanam (subject matter), the physical emaciation caused by the heroine's separation (from her lover) is often mistaken by her foster mothers as Veri Noi (frenzied illness) caused by the possession of Lord Muruga. It is customary for the Velan (a shaman/priest of Muruga) to perform a ritual known as Veriyadal (frenzied dance). Verivilakkal (Banning the Frenzied Dance) is the act where the heroine's female friend intervenes to stop this ritual, revealing the truth of the heroine's real love (Kalavu/secret love) to protect her chastity (Karp/fidelity).
This research paper examines how the Vaishnava Bhakti literature, specifically Nammazhwar (Parankusa Nayaki) and Pillai Perumal Iyengar (Manavala Nayaki), adapted this classical tradition to establish 'transcendental' Bhakti. Nammazhwar condemned Veriyadal as the 'inferiority of minor deity worship' and established Narayana as the 'Supreme Deity' (Perundheivam). As a cure, he prescribed Vaishnava symbols such as the dust from the feet of devotees and the Tulasi garland. Manavala Nayaki rejected animal sacrifice, proposing the chanting of the Lord's holy names (Thirunama Uraithal) and bathing in the Silambaaru River of Maliruncholai as the solution.
This study establishes that through their Verivilakkal, the secular love (Kalavozhukkam) was transformed into 'Prema' Bhakti (devotional love) for the Paramatma (Supreme Soul), thereby establishing Vaishnava monopolistic devotion.

Rajalakshmi College of Arts & Science (Autonomous), Bharathiar University, Coimbatore – 641 049 India , Dr. K. Nagarathinam IndiaManagement related information is densely embedded in Sangam literature.
The present study concentrates on three pivotal administrative domains that surface in the Eṭṭu Thogai corpus and other Sangam era writings:
- Water management
- Trade (commercial) management
- Education management
The Tamil community of antiquity accorded high priority to management in every aspect of daily life. Management emerged as an indispensable foundation for raising living standards and for re organising the structures of livelihood.
Human beings, unable to function optimally in isolation, formed collectives that amplified their administrative capacity. From this collaborative activity leadership qualities blossomed, giving rise to a managerial mindset capable of navigating and overcoming natural obstacles.
Furthermore, the Sangam period’s system of governance was not driven by self interest; rather, it embodied a dharma based, collective management approach that sought the welfare of every individual living within the community.
The Eṭṭu Thogai texts contain a wealth of evidence that knowledge advancement spurred improvements across a spectrum of sectors—water, land, education, trade, and others—demonstrating the sophisticated administrative foresight of the era.

Devadas's translation of Thomas Mann’s German book, The Black Swan, into the Tamil novel Karuppu Annam, deeply looks at what it means to age, want things, and be a woman in society and in your head. It tells the story of a 50 year old widow who feels young again, which causes her a lot of emotional trouble. The book also shows how complicated things can get between a mother and daughter, and it points out how society sees older women who date. This paper looks at how the old Tamil ideas of Kaikkilai and Peruntinai fit into and work with the story. By comparing these ideas to the book, we can see how they give us a better understanding of the feelings, thoughts, and culture in Karuppu Annam. What we find shows that Tamil literary theory is still important for understanding new stories and the lives of women today.

S. Saranraj Full-time PhD Research Scholar, School of Social Sciences and Languages, Vellore University of Technology, Vellore India , Dr. A. Maria Sebastian Assistant Professor, Lecturer, School of Social Sciences and Languages, Vellore University of Technology, Vellore IndiaIn the Tamil research field, various studies have evolved and reached significant development. Among them, the theory of narratology is noteworthy. Narratology helps us understand the transformations that occur while narrating an event and the processes that bring about those transformations. Within this theory, the study of characters becomes an essential component. Characters form the core of a narrative and determine its events as well as its outcome. Furthermore, the “background”, which is an important element of narratology, reveals the lives and emotions of these characters. In particular, both the subject and the theme play a crucial role in shaping this background. This research aims to analyse, from a narratological perspective, the background structure of the character - namely the hero (thalaivan), the heroine (thalaivi), and the friend (thozhi)-who appear in the Natrinai poems.

IndiaNo other family ties or relationships were as important to lovers as the relationship between lover and beloved. In love, sometimes there are small flirtations and then reunions, and anxiety arises between lovers due to the obstacles imposed by family and society. Short-term and long-term separations between lovers cause anxiety in the lover. Love is a beautiful thing, but it can sometimes be confusing, leading to separation and anxiety between lovers. The best love ultimately ends in marriage. Life is a joyful, painful, and profound experience that manifests itself in many forms, and its various dimensions can be seen in this article.

Therefore, travel is a sweet experience in human life. People derive immense joy from going to new places, meeting new people, and visiting the sites of ancient cultures. Traveling is an art. A journey is defined as moving from one place of residence to another for some reason. When a traveler delightfully writes about the sights they saw, the news they heard, their experiences, the special characteristics of the place, and the people who live there, it blossoms into travel literature. Those who helped cultivate this as a distinct genre in Tamil literature are A.K. Chettiar and Somasundaram (Somaley). Father Thani Nayagam has written all of his travel experiences as essays. The purpose of this article is to analyze his travel experience in Japan.

Dr. A. Atheeswari IndiaKurunthokai, one of the foremost Akam (interior/love-themed) texts of Sangam literature, not only records the emotional states of love and separation but also profoundly articulates high ethical principles that refine human life. This research article aims to establish the moral framework of that era by extensively examining the life-principles (the philosophy of the three ways: aram (virtue), porul (wealth/matter), inpam (pleasure); the obligatory nature of giving; the ethic of compassion imbued with love) contained in Kurunthokai. The study's findings confirm that aram (virtue/ethics) was structured not merely as a tool for individual inner purity but as an obligatory ethic (Puram / external duty) that begins with earning wealth and culminates in acting for the benefit of other beings with a sense of public welfare. Specifically, the view that the gift of charity (Eekai) is considered an obligation, and the depiction of asking back a gift as a disgrace worse than losing one’s life (Kurunthokai 349), illustrates the severity with which the Sangam society penalized ethical deviation. Overall, Kurunthokai emphasizes the central idea that social obligation and expansive love are fundamental to the richness of inner life.

Maheswari Assistant professor, Department of tamil, Faculty of Humanities and Science, Meenakshi Academy of Higher Education and Research, K.K.Nagar, Chennai-78 IndiaThis study investigates the references to women's games (Magalir Vilaiyaattu) found within the Thiruvasagam, a revered work of Shaivite devotional literature composed by Manikkavasagar. Ancient Tamil literature, tracing back to the Sangam period, highlights the enduring practice of worship and recreation. Thiruvasagam, as part of the twelve Thirumurais (holy anthologies), not only details the nature of Shiva worship but also incorporates a significant number of references to traditional games. Games have been a fundamental form of recreation for the people of the Tamil land from the Sangam era to the present day. Manikkavasagar skillfully adopted the format of folk game songs to express profound religious fervor and deep emotional connection to the divine. This paper aims to identify the specific women's games mentioned in Manikkavasagar's hymns, demonstrate their continuity and relevance in popular culture even today, and analyze the spiritual and cultural benefits derived by the people through the medium of these playful expressions of devotion. The analysis reveals how Manikkavasagar uses the joyful activities of women to express his own ecstatic, personal experience of divine realization.

Film music is made sweet. Newly added film music is more attractive to today's youth, middle class and students than traditional music. This film music reaches everyone through film songs. Songs by Mahakavi Bharathi, Bavendar Bharathidasan, Namakkal poet songs, and Sudhananda Bharathiyar songs have also been written according to the scenes of the films from time to time. There are many artistic geniuses and poets who have given literary value to film songs. Among them were Papanasam Sivan, Sankara Das Swamigal, Udumalai Narayana Kavi, Kambadasan, Thanjavur Ramaiyadas, K.M. Balasubramanian, Mayavanathan, Kavigamu Sharif, N. Kamarajan, Pulamaippitthan, Muthulingam, A. Marudhakasi, Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, poet Kannadasan, and Vali are the most notable. Therefore, film music songs cannot be completely set aside or ignored. They also have a specific place in society. They create a great impact among the youth. Ideas such as opposing the fascists, working for the country, teaching good things mixed with politics in dialogue and visuals, and working hard and progressing became the central theme (cultural name) of MGR's films. Vali's songs serve as the seed for these. Film songs were also written for films in which Sivaji acted, expressing ideas such as making any sacrifice for love, suppressing the arrogance of wealth, and adhering to justice.

Dr. Ravi Head of the Department of Tamil, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Vadapalani Campus, Chennai-26. IndiaPostmodernism stands as a rebellious theory, embracing the impossibilities that profoundly shake the foundations of idealists and optimists. The very essence of postmodernism lies in its attempt to dismantle all the arrangements that have kept our society static and undisturbed until now.
The core of this research is to analyze the poetry of Salma, Sukirtharani, and Kutti Revathi, who write with a similar rebellious spirit and mindset, and to situate their works within the framework of postmodern theoretical construction. This study seeks to demonstrate how the subversive and challenging nature of these poets' verses aligns with the central tenets of postmodern thought, particularly in their critique of established social and cultural norms.

Dr. SHIBU B Assistant Professor of English, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Govt. Arts and Science College Balussery, Kerala, India IndiaCaste stratification is a key characteristic of Indian society, reinforced by the ideological control that elitist Hindus exercise over Dalits. This control exploits two types of fear: the fear of divine wrath (fear of the unknown) that keeps lower castes in subordination to avoid supposed divine fury, and the fear of real-world repercussions (fear of the known), such as physical or material punishment for defying the social order. Together, these fears historically suppress resistance among Dalits. Indian cinema, deeply intertwined with the matrix of caste relations, frequently addresses caste dynamics in various ways. Due to its overt ideological underpinnings, cinema often negotiates the intricate implications of caste relations, ultimately reinforcing the longstanding hegemonic caste hierarchy. However, a counter movement in Tamil cinema spearheaded by directors like Pa Ranjith, Mari Selvaraj, and Vetrimaaran challenges this narrative. Films such as Asuran, Karnan, and Mamannan use an aesthetic of violence to articulate and validate the suppressed rage of the Dalit community, thus attacking the rigid caste structures. This paper examines how these films visually and narratively express the pent-up anger of the Dalits, contributing to a transformative cinematic and social discourse.

Karuppusamy R PhD Research Scholar (Full Time), Department of Astrology, VISTAS, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India India , Dr. K. Jothimani Research Guide, Associate Professor & HOD, Department of Astrology, VISTAS, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India India"A life without disease is wealth without want." This timeless axiom underscores the supreme value of good health. In the contemporary world, marked by highly stressful lifestyles, poor dietary choices, and pervasive anxiety, there has been an alarming surge in chronic metabolic disorders, among which Diabetes Mellitus stands out as a major public health concern. Sufferers of diabetes endure not only substantial financial strain but also profound physical debility and mental distress, significantly diminishing their quality of life. The increasing incidence necessitates an exploration of effective, complementary, and non-invasive management strategies.
This research paper explores Mudras, an ancient therapeutic art and an integral part of traditional Indian knowledge systems, as a powerful complementary practice for managing diabetes. Mudras are specific hand gestures believed to regulate the flow of vital energy (Prana) throughout the body by balancing the five fundamental elements (Pancha Bhoota). The study focuses on specific restorative Mudras—such as the Rudra Mudra, Matangi Mudra, and Mushti Mudra—which are traditionally recommended to stimulate and strengthen crucial endocrine and digestive organs like the pancreas, liver, and spleen, thereby helping to stabilize blood sugar levels.
The paper provides detailed explanations, instructions, and time guidelines for performing these diabetes-specific Mudras. Furthermore, it adopts a unique approach by incorporating an astrological perspective, analyzing the example horoscope of an individual successfully managing diabetes through the consistent practice of these Mudras. The case study demonstrates the practical efficacy of integrating Mudra therapy into an overall health regimen. The findings suggest that incorporating these simple, zero-side-effect Mudras offers a potent method to bring diabetes under control, promoting overall physical and mental well-being as a valuable element of integrated medicine.

M.K. Senthilkumar PhD Research Scholar, Department of Tamilology, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar. IndiaAfter the introduction of 'Comparative Literature' in the Western literary world, various new changes occurred in the research approach. One of these is approaching literature from the perspective of other disciplines. That is, acquiring knowledge from fields like Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, and Mythology and using them to analyze and interpret literary works. As a result, various approaches like the Sociological approach, Psychoanalytic approach, and Mythological approach have emerged and are being adopted by critics. In Tamil literature too, the trend of analyzing literature by following such approaches is now widely seen. In this context, this article aims to examine the myth present in Jeyakanthan's story, Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal (A Few People at Certain Times).
Furthermore, this article also analyzes how the myth about Ahalya from the story Agni Pravesam (Entry by Fire), which is part of the collection Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal, has been employed.

Karuppusamy R PhD Research Scholar, Department of Astrology, VISTAS, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India India , Dr. K. Jothimani Research Guide, Associate Professor & HOD, Department of Astrology, VISTAS, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India IndiaThis research paper deeply explores Diabetes (referred to in Siddha as Madhumegam and Megapiramai) through the integrated perspective of traditional Siddha medicine and astrological science. Human physiology is described based on Siddha medicine’s fundamental 96 Thathuvams (philosophies), the Five Elements theory (Pancha Bootham), and the Tridoshas—Vatham, Pitham, and Kapham.
Specifically, it establishes how the causes of diabetes—improper diet, stress, and lack of rest—connect with the planetary associations of the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas). The correlations of the planets that dominate diabetes—Jupiter (associated with fat, liver, and diabetes) and Venus (associated with sugar levels and eye complications)—are analyzed meticulously.
In conclusion, the paper explains treatment protocols involving pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), Satvic diet plans tailored to the Dasa Bhukti (planetary periods) system, and herbal remedies. This integrated approach highlights Siddha medicine's unique ability to cure chronic diseases (efficiently and cost-effectively) and emphasizes its personalized nature that adapts to the patient's individual biological and astrological timing.

Karthikeyan Research Guide, Assistant Professor, Department of Advanced Tamil Studies, Dharmapuram Adheenam Arts College, Dharmapuram, Mayiladuthurai IndiaSangam Literature not only documents the life and culture of the ancient Tamils but also serves as a treasury of deep scientific and technological knowledge [1]. Specifically, information related to agriculture reveals the sophisticated practical skills and profound observations of nature held by the society of that era. This research paper aims to analyze the agricultural science concepts found in Sangam poems and Tholkappiyam from a subtle scientific perspective [1]. The practice of agriculture spanned multiple stages, from seed selection to harvest. This study highlights how our ancestors incorporated meticulously discovered agricultural knowledge, giving importance to each of these actions, into the literature [1]. Tholkappiyar's classification of plants based on their inner and outer core (, ) reflects their advanced knowledge of plant anatomy [1]. Furthermore, the use of organic manure (), based on cattle manure (or compost) and green leaf manure, was intended to create an oxygen-rich and hygienic environment necessary for root growth and microbial activity in the soil [1]. Notably, the message from the Purananuru poem, where the Kuravas (hill people) sowed millet without ploughing, utilizing the activity of the wild boar (Keazhal pig), establishes the superior technique of the ancient Tamils in integrating the functions of the ecological system into agricultural practices. Therefore, this study emphasizes that the farming methods followed by the ancient Tamils were based on sustainable and subtle scientific principles.

Dr.G. JEYAJOTHI Assistant Professor, Department of Tamil, Sona College of Arts and Science, Salem - 636 030 IndiaWhen humanity began contemplating the creation of the world and the origin of mankind, they fashioned many imaginary stories and ancient beliefs. These beliefs encompassed various dimensions, ranging from the world's genesis to the significance of the Mother Goddess. Myth is generally considered a method of conveying ideas through symbols, particularly religious symbols. Furthermore, it serves as a foundation for bringing forth the psychological tendencies buried within the imaginary dreams of humans. Tolkāppiyam, the most ancient work of Tamil literature, established myth (toṉmam) as the literary element 'toṉmai' (antiquity) and land-based deities (māyoṉ, ceyoṉ, vēntaṉ, varuṇaṉ) as the primary component of karupporuḷ (the elements belonging to a specific landscape). However, the Tirukkuṟaḷ, a universal code of ethics, deviates from land-based mythologies and ritualistic worship traditions, redefining the terms 'Iṟai' (God/Lord) and 'teyvam' (Deity/Divine) as high philosophical and ethical goals. While Valluvar describes 'Iṟai' as an abstract power, the perfection of virtuous qualities (āthi pakavaṉ, eṇkuṇattāṉ - The Primordial Being, The Eight-Fold Virtuous One), he establishes the status of 'teyvam' based on humanity's supreme virtues such as an excellent domestic life, pure chastity, the wisdom to know others' minds, and perseverance. This article establishes how the Tirukkuṟaḷ ethically transformed the concept of myth from the Tolkāppiyam tradition by examining its linguistic and philosophical applications.

Dr. (Mrs.) Thakshayini Paramadevan Senior Lecturer - Gr - I, Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies, Eastern University, Srilanka. IndiaVarious communities in India possess uniqueness through their religion, traditions, and cultural forms. Among them, the "Kali Kambu Dance" found in the Muslim community stands as a notable traditional art form. It is a folk dance that expresses religious faith, spiritual emotion, and social unity.
The Kali Kambu Dance originated from the religious worship traditions of the Muslim community and is a traditional art form performed during commemorative events related to Pirs (Saints) and Valis (Holy Men). In this dance, the performers revolve in a circle, rhythmically dancing with sticks to the beat. Musical instruments such as the Thavil, Thappu, and Uththareena Nadaswaram are used. The songs mainly consist of religious praises and verses exalting the greatness of the Valis.
This dance works to foster unity, spiritual ecstasy, and faith within the community. Furthermore, it instills qualities such as discipline, cooperation, and religious respect among the youth. The Kali Kambu Dance serves as a cultural identity integrating people's life, tradition, and religion.
Although this dance is currently diminishing in some areas, it still thrives in religious festivals within certain Muslim communities. Even though its form has undergone changes due to the influence of modern music, lighting, and costumes, its original spiritual essence remains unchanged. From a researcher's perspective, the Kali Kambu Dance is an important field of study spanning the domains of folk tradition, religious art, and cultural expression.

Ramapuram, Chennai - 89 IndiaEpics are traditionally composed centering on the four fundamental goals of life: Virtue (Aram), Wealth (Porul), Pleasure (Inbam), and Salvation (Veedu). Silappathikaram, considered the foremost among the Five Great Epics, is generally identified as a 'Tragic Drama' or a 'Tragic Epic'. However, the objective of this research paper is to explore how 'Nakai' (Laughter/Humor)—the first among the eight types of sentiments (Meippadu) defined by Tholkappiyar—is manifested in this epic. This paper explains in detail the subtle contributions of the four causal factors of Nakai—namely Mockery (Ellal), Naivety/Youthfulness (Ilamai), Ignorance (Pethamai), and Credulity (Madan)—within the dramatic context and characterization of Silappathikaram. Finally, this study establishes that these elements of humor not only assist in the epic's reflection of holistic human life but specifically serve to uphold the supremacy of Kannagi's blemishless love and the virtue of her chastity (Pattini).

Vanitha Research Guide, Assistant Professor, Department of Tamil Studies, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar - 608 002 IndiaThis research paper analyzes the socio-economic struggles and working conditions of laborers as depicted in D. Selvaraj’s Sahitya Akademi award-winning novel, Thol (The Skin). Set against the backdrop of the leather tanning industry in the Dindigul region, the study examines the severe physical and mental hardships faced by the workforce, including hazardous exposure to chemicals and lime pits that lead to chronic diseases and mortality. The paper further explores the systemic exploitation inherent in the industry, specifically the bonded labor system (Kothadimai), where debt bondage traps families for generations. It highlights the intersection of class and caste, illustrating how social evils such as untouchability and caste-based discrimination are practiced not only in the workplace but also in educational institutions and public spaces. The study concludes that the novel serves as a realistic documentation of the injustices, poverty, and oppression endured by the marginalized working class under capitalist domination.

Dr.M.Malathi Academic consultant, Department of Tamil, S.V.U. College of Arts, S V University, Tirupati, IndiaSangam literature serves as the primary historical documentation reflecting the lifestyle, culture, martial ethics, and moral codes of ancient Tamil society. Within these literary works, there is abundant internal evidence showing that women held unparalleled positions in education, valor, love, marriage, and the arts. However, another facet of this society was the tragic life of widows. Sangam poems meticulously record how widows were subjected to extremely rigid moral restrictions and social oppression. Practices such as Sati (self-immolation), Kaimmai Nonbu (the penance of widowhood), the shaving of hair, the shedding of ornaments, and strict dietary restrictions transformed the lives of widows into a form of long-term punishment. This article provides a detailed exploration—through Sangam verses—of how women were oppressed in the name of 'Chastity' (Karpu) during Tamil Nadu's transition from a matriarchal structure to a patriarchal, property-based society. It also examines the nuances of 'Paruthi Pendir' (women spinners), who represented the economic livelihood of widows. Furthermore, this study analyzes the sociological roots of these restrictions by comparing them with modern social research.

Dr.M.Malathi Academic consultant, Department of Tamil, S.V.U. College of Arts, S V University, Tirupati, 517 502, AP IndiaSangam Literature serves as a temporal mirror, proclaiming the lofty culture and ethical principles of ancient Tamil Nadu to the world. Notably, the education, bravery, love, and social contributions of Sangam-era women are recorded in these literary works in an astonishing manner. However, on the flip side of this 'Golden Age' depiction, the status of widows is found to be deeply tragic and filled with oppression. During the period when the matriarchal social structure began to fade and Tamil Nadu transitioned into a land-owning patriarchal society, the concept of 'Karpu' (Chastity) reinforced a mindset that viewed women as private property. Consequently, cruel practices such as 'Kaimmai Nonbu' (Widowhood penance) and 'Udankattai Eruthal' (Sati) were imposed on widows as social norms.
Using evidence from Sangam works such as Purananuru, Narrinai, Akananuru, and Tolkappiyam, this study extensively examines the social status of widows. Specifically, against the backdrop of the 'Ananku' (Sacred Power) theory proposed by George L. Hart, this research analyzes why widows were isolated from society and why the defacement of their beauty was considered necessary. Furthermore, this paper provides a detailed compilation of the differences in widowhood practices between aristocratic and common women, economic factors, and the changes that have occurred in the modern era.Key words: Sangam Literature, Widow, , Concept of Chastity, Women’s Oppression, Sangam Age Society..

Dr. Siva. Mullaimalar Principal & Head of the Department of Tamil, Imayam Arts and Science College, Vaniyambadi – 635751, IndiaPurananuru, one of the primary anthologies of Sangam literature, stands as a foremost historical testimony capturing the external social values and political traditions of ancient Tamil society. Comprising four hundred poems, this work deeply records not only governance, warfare, philanthropy, and friendship, but also the multifaceted social status of women during the Sangam era. This research paper comprehensively examines the position of women in Purananuru based on its poems, the works of female poets, and modern critical theories. Aspects such as motherhood, wifely virtues, hospitality, the heroic valor of martial women (Moothin Mullai), the diplomatic and political contributions of female poets, and the penance of widows (Aanandhappaiyul) are critically analyzed in this paper. This paper aims to analyze from a dual perspective both the high esteem women held in Sangam society and, at the same time, the social restrictions imposed on their bodies and lives.
