Language is a powerful tool of communication, and one of its most interesting features is the ability of a single word to convey multiple meanings. In English, such words are commonly referred to as homonyms, whereas in Tamil this phenomenon is known as “ஒரு சொல்லுக்குப் பல பொருள்.” This article presents a detailed comparative study of English homonyms and the Tamil concept of multiple meanings. It examines definitions, classifications, examples, contextual usage, similarities, differences, and the role of culture and grammar. The study highlights how both languages enrich expression while relying heavily on context for accurate interpretation.
