Abstract

This study examines the significance of the Kodappu in the life practices of the Aayar community associated with the Mullai landscape. Constructed using readily available natural materials such as bamboo poles, palm leaves, and fibers, the Kodappu functions as an indispensable structure in both the temporary and permanent living arrangements of the Aayars. In particular, the Pullinathu Aayars, including shepherds who rear goats, extensively use the kodappu for protecting livestock as well as for residential purposes.

In the Mullai landscape, where livestock rearing constitutes the primary occupation, the kodappu serves as a protective shield safeguarding animals from natural elements such as heat and rain, as well as from attacks by wild animals like dogs, foxes, tigers, and leopards. Its functions further extend to protecting young offspring, isolating sick animals, and facilitating feeding practices, thereby broadening its practical utility.

Moreover, for the nomadic Aayars who follow a migratory lifestyle, the kodappu provides a simple and efficient means of erecting temporary shelters to meet immediate residential needs. The use of the kodappu across various aspects of life—such as habitation, storage of goods, cooking, bathing, and ritual worship-reflects the nature-oriented life practices and traditional knowledge systems of the Aayar community. Thus, this study argues that the kodappu is not merely a structural form but also serves as a vital cultural symbol representing the identity and lived traditions of the Aayar community.
