Abstract

Since "Silappathikaram" serves as a historical dramatic poem, it contains many observations regarding the social structure of the people of that era. According to the notion that literature acts as a mirror reflecting the times, the Madurai Kandam vividly illustrates the way of life of the people during that period. Just as Madurai thrived with all its prosperity two thousand years ago, it continues to stand strong today without diminishing its status.The aim of this article is to examine the qualities of the noble Velanjai, mentioned in Silappathikaram, his governance, and the consequences arising from the failure of the Pandyan justice system

1. குடிமக்கள் காப்பியம் என்ற சிறப்பிற்குரிய சிலம்பு மூவேந்தர் காப்பியமாகவும் அந்நாளைய அரசாட்சியை விளக்கும் வரலாற்றுப் பெட்டகமாகவும் உள்ளது.

2. மிகவும் தொன்மை வாய்ந்த நகரமாக, குடிமக்கள் இடம் பெயர்தலை அறியாப் பெருமை கொண்டதாக மதுரை விளங்கியதை மதுரைக் காண்டம் நன்கு உணர்த்துகிறது.

3. சேர, சோழ, பாண்டியர் எனும் மூவேந்தர்களும் அந்நாளில் செங்கோலாட்சி புரிந்து வரினும் மதுரை பாண்டியர்களால் சிறப்புப் பெற்று பாண்டியர்களின் அடையாளமாகவே இன்று வரை இருந்து வருகிறது.

4. மதுரையை ஆண்ட பாண்டியன் நெடுஞ்செழியன் பெருமை மிக்க மரபிலே தொன்றி, சிறந்த வீரனாக செங்கோல் ஆட்சி புரிந்துள்ளான். நெடுஞ்செழியன் ஆட்சியில் பாதுகாவல் நிறைந்திருந்தது. பொருள் வளமும் மிகுந்திருந்தது.

5. விதியின் வலியால் பொற்கொல்லன் சொல்கேட்டு நீதி வழுவியதை அறிந்த நெடுஞ்செழியன் தவறை உணர்ந்து உடனே உயிரை விட்டான் . பலியெனின் தாங்காத மனம் கொண்ட பாண்டியரின் ஆடசித் திறம் இதன் வழி வெளிப்படுகிறது.

6. காவல் நிறைத்திருந்த மதுரையிலும் கள்வர்கள் இருந்ததனை மதுரைக் காண்டம் வழி அறியமுடிகிறது.
