Marriages serve as both a cultural hallmark of human civilization and a socially recognized institution. The Tolkāppiyam, an ancient Tamil treatise, references Sanskrit literature in classifying marriages into eight traditional forms: Brahma, Daiva, Arsha, Prajapatya, Gandharva, Asura, Rakshasa, and Paisacha. However, evolving with time, modern society predominantly witnesses two distinct types of marriages—arranged and love marriages.This article examines their portrayal in contemporary literature, delving into the associated complexities, conflicts, and societal challenges they depict.
