Devotional Literature Praises Parangusan

Abstract

Devotional literature is one of the most important elements of ancient Indian philosophical tradition. Within it, two major branches existed: Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Among the Vaishnavites, the revered figure was Nammalvar. His depth of devotion is clearly evident in other literary works. During his lifetime, he stood as a counterforce to other religions. At a time when other religions held dominant styles, he restrained them like a mahout controlling an elephant with a goad. Using the intensity of his devotion to Vishnu as a foundation, he paved the way for the growth of Vaishnavism.

பக்தி இலக்கியம் பண்டைய இந்திய தத்துவ மரபின் மிக முக்கிய கூறுகளில் ஒன்று. இவற்றில் சைவம், வைணம் என்ற இரு பெரும் பிரிவு நிலவியது. வைணவர்களால் போற்றப்பட்டவர் நம்மாழ்வார். இவரின் பக்தியின் திறம், இவரது படைப்புகளில் வெளிப்படையாக தெரியும். தான் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில் பிற சமயங்களுக்கு அங்குசமாக திகழ்ந்தார். பிற சமயங்கள் பெரிய யானையாக நிலவிய காலத்தில் யானையை கட்டுப்படுத்த பாகன் கையில் உள்ள அங்கும் போல பிற சமயங்கங்களைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தினார். விஷ்ணு மீது கொண்ட பக்தியின் திறத்தினை முன் வைத்து, வைணவ சமயம் மேம்பட வழிவகை செய்தவர்.
