According to Vedanta philosophy, this world—situated between the earthly plane and the realm of Brahma—is the abode of sages and saints who have attained high levels of spiritual achievement.

In the Vedas and Upanishads, references to Jana-loka are accompanied by profound theoretical explanations. When the Chandogya Upanishad explains the five fires (Pancha-agni) and the realms attained through them, it depicts Jana-loka as a pinnacle of wisdom. In the Puranas, particularly the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana, Jana-loka is described as the residence of the Sanaka Kumaras (the mind-born sons of Brahma). Those who dwell here are portrayed as being liberated from the cycle of birth and fixed in eternal wisdom.

It is believed that yogis and ascetics stay in Jana-loka to undergo further purification before reaching the ultimate Brahmanjali in their spiritual journey.
