Ecology in Purananuru: புறநானூற்றில் சூழலியல்

Abstract

This article discusses how the environmental awareness and thoughts observed in humans today were present among the ancient Tamils of the Sangam period, as reflected in Sangam literature. The people of the Sangam era were well aware of the changes occurring in nature and the changes brought about by human activities to nature. Furthermore, it can be understood from these texts that they possessed comprehensive knowledge encompassing forests, mountains, rainwater, the sky, the moon, and the five elements (Pancha Bhootas). While similar information is found in many Sangam literary works, this study specifically examines the environmental themes found in Purananuru.

இன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் மனிதர்களிடம் காண்கின்ற சுற்றுச்சூழல் குறித்த விழிப்புணர்வு மற்றும் சிந்தனைகள் சங்க இலக்கிய பழந்தமிழர்களிடம் இருந்துள்ளது என்பதைப் பற்றி இக்கட்டுரை எடுத்துரைக்கின்றன. சங்ககால மக்கள் இயற்கையில் ஏற்படுகின்ற மாற்றங்கள் மனிதர்களால் இயற்கைக்கு ஏற்படுகின்ற மாற்றங்கள் ஆகியவற்றை அறிந்தவர்களாக இருந்துள்ளனர். மேலும் காடுகள், மலைகள், மழைநீர், வானம், நிலா, பஞ்ச பூதங்கள் என அனைத்து வகையான அறிவினையும் ஒருசேர பெற்றுள்ளவற்றை இங்கு அறியலாம். சங்க இலகியங்கள் பலவற்றில இது போன்ற செய்திகள் இருப்பினும் புறநானூற்றில் காணப்படும் சூழலில் சார்ந்தசெய்திகள் மட்டும் இங்கு ஆராயப்பட்டுள்ளது.
