On Dreams in the Tirukkural: A Neuroscientific Study

Abstract

Dreams demonstrate that our brain can automatically generate and allow us to perceive events based on our conscious experiences. It is surprising that Valluvar spoke about dreams – including how they relate to brain functions based on conscious experiences during sleep, why the dreamer is often detached from their environment, and whether dreaming is closely related to mental imagination and ideas – at a time when neuroscientific facts were still unknown. It is not only surprising that Valluvar discussed dreams when neuroscientific facts were yet unknown, but it is also astonishing that he specifically dedicated Chapter 122 to the topic, titled 'Kanavunilaiyuraiththal' (The Nature of Dreams). Furthermore, besides these, he has also mentioned dreams in the Porutpal (Book on Wealth/Politics) in chapters such as 'Thee Natpu' (Evil Friendship - 819) and 'Iravu' (Begging - 1054). Current neuroscientific studies have confirmed the phenomena Valluvar described, such as the appearance of a lover in dreams, finding pleasures in dreams that are not obtainable in wakefulness, and the connections between dreams and waking life.

நமது மூளை, நம் நினவான அனுபவங்களின் மூலம் நிகழ்வுகளை தானாகவே உருவாக்கி நம்மால் காண முடியும் என்பதை கனவுகள் காட்டுகின்றன. தூக்கத்தில் நினவான அனுபவங்கள் அடிப்படையில், மூளை செயல்பாடுகளுடன் எவ்வாறு அவை தொடர்புடையவை என்பது பற்றியும், கனவு காண்பவர் ஏன் சுற்றுச்சூழலிருந்து, பெரும்பாலும் தூக்கத்தில் விடுபட்டிருப்பது, பற்றியும் மேலும் கனவு காண்பது மன கற்பனையுடனும் கருத்துக்களுடனும் மிகவும் தொடர்புடையதா? என்பது பற்றியும் வள்ளுவர் கனவு பற்றி மூளைநரம்பியல் அறிவியல் உண்மைகள் அறியப்படாத அன்றே கூறியிருப்பது வியப்பான ஒன்றாகும். வள்ளுவன் கனவு பற்றி மூளைநரம்பியல் அறிவியல் உண்மைகள் அறியப்படாத அன்றே கூறி இருப்பது மட்டுமல்லாமல், அதற்காக அதிகாரம் 122 கனவுநிலை யுரைத்தல் என்னும் தலைப்பில் கூறி இருப்பது விந்தையாகும். மேலும், இவை தவிர கனவுபற்றி பொருட்பாலில் தீ நட்பு (819), இரவு (1054) என்னும் அதிகாரங்களிலும் கூறியிருக்கின்றார். கனவில், காதலன் தோன்றுவது, நினைவில் கிடைக்காத இன்பம் கனவில் கிடைப்பது, கனவுக்கும் நனவுக்கும் உள்ள தொடர்புகள் பற்றி வள்ளுவர் கூறியதை இப்போதைய மூளை நரம்பியல் ஆய்வுகள் எவ்வாறு நடைபெறுகிறது என்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்தி இருக்கின்றன.
