Bonded labour of the Irular tribal people of the plains of Tiruvallur district

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the hardships faced by the Irular community due to their way of life, their state of slavery resulting from their nomadic existence, the reasons for becoming bonded laborers, and the places where this bonded labor is performed. It details and examines how, due to the importance they attach to rituals, they are made to take advance payments, which eventually enslaves them and forces entire families into bonded labor in rice mills, brick kilns, agricultural fields, and domestic work. It further elaborates on how they are forced to work excessively by landlords and dominant social groups. The article points out that a lack of education is one of the reasons for the continuation of bonded labor in some places and makes a plea for the government to provide educational counseling to them. Ultimately, this article is structured to establish that improving the lives of the Irular community is not only the responsibility of the government but a duty for all of society.

இருளர்களின் வாழ்க்கை முறையால் அவர்கள் அடைந்துள்ள இன்னல்களைப் பற்றி ஆராயும் நோக்கமும், இம்மக்களின் நாடோடி வாழ்க்கையால் இவர்கள் அடைந்துள்ள அடிமை நிலையையும், கொத்தடிமையாக மாறியதற்கான காரணங்களையும், கொத்தடிமை வேலை செய்யும் இடங்களையும் பகுத்து இக்கட்டுரையில் ஆராயப்பட்டுள்ளன. சடங்குகளுக்கு இவர்கள் அளிக்கும் முக்கியத்துவத்தின் காரணமாக முன்பணம் பெற்று இறுதியில் இவர்கள் அடிமைப்படுத்தப்பட்டு அரிசி ஆலை, செங்கல் சூலை, விவசாய வேலை, மற்றும் வீட்டு வேலைகளில் குடும்பத்துடன் அடிமைப்படுத்தப்பட்டு வேலை செய்யும் நிலையையும் மற்றும் நிலக்கிழார்களாலும், ஆதிக்க சமூகத்தினராலும் அடிமைப்படுத்தப்பட்டு இவர்கள் அதிக அளவு வேலை வாங்கப்படுவதைப் பற்றி விவரித்து ஆராயப்பட்டுள்ளன. கல்வியறிவு பெறாமல் இருப்பதே இன்னும் சில இடங்களில் கொத்தடிமைகளாகத் தொடர்வதற்கு ஒருவகையில் காரணம் என்பதை சுட்டிக்காட்டி அவர்களிடம் கல்வி பற்றிய ஆலோசனைகளை அரசு வழங்கவேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கையும் வைத்து, இவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையை மேம்படுத்துவது அரசு மட்டுமல்லாது அனைத்து சமூகங்களின் கடமை என்பதை நிறுவும்   வகையில் இக்கட்டுரையானது அமைகிறது.
