The Philosophy of Jeeva Samadhi in the Siddhar Gnana Tradition: A Study of Body, Life-Energy, Consciousness and Ethical Life Principles
Abstract
In the Tamil Siddhar tradition, the concept of “Jeeva Samadhi” is presented as a spiritual state in which body and life are integrated through yogic practice so as to transcend time and death and attain permanence. Drawing on the traditional accounts of Thirumoolar, Agathiyar and Bogar, this paper examines the philosophical meaning of Jeeva Samadhi and the ethical life principles that underlie it. Its principal finding is that five components — dietary discipline (pathiyam), pranayama-yoga, moral integrity, detachment, and guru-mediated learning — together prepare an aspirant for this state. The paper further shows that Jeeva Samadhi functions not only as an individual attainment but also, through sacred seats (peedams), as a collective institution that offers continuing spiritual energy to society. It concludes that the Siddhar tradition’s holistic approach, which integrates physical health, mental well-being and social justice, remains relevant to contemporary inquiry.
