Culture serves as a framework for a group's way of life, encompassing their practices, shared values, and social behaviors. It is the lens through which a community organizes its existence and finds meaning. The acquisition of culture is multifaceted, often manifesting through four key virtues: moral principles guiding ethical conduct, material possessions reflecting technological and economic advancements, pursuits of pleasure and enjoyment, and the adoption of austerity, emphasizing simplicity and self-discipline. These virtues intricately weave together the internal (integral) and external aspects of human life, shaping individual and collective identities. The Tamil people boast a rich and enduring cultural heritage, deeply entrenched in their classical language, customs, and traditions for over two millennia. This legacy is vividly portrayed in their esteemed literature, recognized globally for its profound impact and influence on other cultures. The essence of Tamil culture and tradition rests on the integral and intellectual understanding of its people, prioritizing intrinsic values over purely economic considerations. The novels of So. Dharman, a recipient of the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award, provide compelling examples of this value system. Dharman meticulously depicts the lives of the Urulaikkudi people, delving into their agricultural practices, ingenious water resource management techniques, and the diverse forms of worship, celebratory festivals, traditional medicine, age-old rituals, and deeply held conventional beliefs that permeate their existence. These elements are seamlessly integrated into their daily routines, highlighting the inseparable bond between culture and lived experience. This research paper aims to explore the rustic lives and practices of the Tamil people as portrayed by So. Dharman, illuminating the cultural nuances woven into their everyday activities. Through his literary lens, we gain a deeper understanding of the enduring traditions that define their identity. Ultimately, culture serves as the cornerstone of identity and a cherished inheritance for Tamil people, both within their homeland and across the global diaspora.
