Abstract

In Hindu cosmology, the universe is described as being divided into various worlds. Within this structure of fourteen lokas, seven lower realms are identified, with Sutala-loka being the third among them. According to the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana, this realm is under the sovereignty of Mahabali Chakravarti. The significance of Sutala-loka lies in its unique nature; while the lower realms are generally the abode of Asuras, Sutala-loka is distinct because it is ruled by Mahabali, who attained a state of spiritual ecstasy through devotion. During the Vamana avatar, Mahabali renounced his ego and pride, realizing the greatness of charity and sacrifice. Pleased by his humility and devotion, Lord Vishnu granted him the right to rule Sutala-loka.

This realm possesses several special characteristics. Its inhabitants fully enjoy physical pleasures; however, these enjoyments are rooted in the fruits of their past karma. Although Mahabali lives happily here with his subjects, it is believed that he remains eternally under the protection of Vishnu. From a spiritual perspective, Sutala-loka represents the reward for human devotion and humility. Mahabali’s life serves as an example of the blessings one receives by casting aside ego and following the path of bhakti. Nevertheless, like the other lower worlds, this realm is not permanent. Once the fruits of one's karma are exhausted, the inhabitants must return to the cycle of rebirth. This research article explores the philosophical meaning of Sutala-loka, its spiritual outlook, and its place within the Hindu cosmic concept. Through the story of Mahabali, the importance of devotion, humility, and divine grace is explained here.
