Business Ethics in Tamil Literature and Modern Corporate Governance: A Study of Thirukkural from a Commercial Perspective

Abstract Thirukkural, which has been shaping the life principles of the Tamil people for over two thousand years, touches upon all dimensions of human life through the three great realms of Aram (Virtue), Porul (Wealth), and Inbam (Love). Among these, the section on Porutpal (Wealth) contains profound ethical concepts regarding the acquisition, management, and distribution of wealth. This article aims to comparatively analyze the concepts of business ethics embedded in Thirukkural alongside modern corporate governance and management theories. Through this study, it is established that modern corporate ethical elements—such as honesty, reliability, accountability, leadership, human resource management, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)—were foreshadowed in many chapters of Thirukkural. Based on a bibliographic research methodology, this article cites fifteen recent Tamil research papers to establish that Thirukkural stands not merely as classical literature, but as a timeless guide for sustainable business ethics and the development of corporate governance.
