In the Tamil literary tradition, Sangam literature stands as a primary document reflecting the three dimensions of language, culture, and grammar simultaneously. Among them, Akananuru is a unique classical work that expresses the depth of human emotions through intricate verb forms within its linguistic structure. This study provides a detailed analysis of the verb forms found in Akananuru against the background of the grammatical principles of Tolkappiyam.
Specifically, it explores how finite verbs, non-finite verbs (verbal and relative participles), temporal elements (tenses), and adverbs serve as the foundation for "Emotional Movement" and psychological depth within the Akam (interior) landscape. By linking the verb structures of Sangam-era Tamil with modern fields such as Computational Linguistics and Part-of-Speech (POS) Tagging, this research establishes the timeless utility of classical grammar. The primary objective of this paper is to explain how the 400 poems of Akananuru are structured by verbs based on emotion and to reveal the possibilities Sangam literature offers for contemporary linguistic research.
