Abstract

This article provides a detailed analysis of how the theory of ‘Meimmayakkam’ (Consonant Clusters/Blending) is handled in the Eluttatikaram (Book of Orthography) of Tolkappiyam. Generally, students perceive Meimmayakkam merely as a section within Nunmarapu; however, Tolkappiyam discusses this concept across several chapters of Eluttatikaram.

The article explains that Meimmayakkam is defined in two states: Udanilai (Immediate/Self-clustering), where a consonant blends with itself, and Vetrunilai (External/Cross-clustering), where a consonant blends with other consonants. It further discusses the nine types of letter blending mentioned by the commentator Ilampuranar, arguing that only the blending of a consonant with another consonant falls under a strictly defined grammatical framework. Additionally, the paper clarifies the nature of triple consonant clusters (occurring after ya, ra, and zha) and demonstrates how the rules of Meimmayakkam serve as the foundation when words like ‘Pon’ undergo transformations during Punarchi (Internal/External Sandhi).
