Bullock Cart Racing: A Study of the Traditional Sports of Northern Sri Lankan Tamils

Abstract

Heritage is an invaluable asset that identifies the unique identity of every ethnic group. It acts as a dialogue between people of the past and the present, helping to determine and guide the future. While diverse ethnic groups exist globally, the heritage aspects of Tamils remain distinct. Among them, Bullock Cart Racing holds significant importance as a traditional sport closely linked to the rural lifestyle and social traditions of Northern Sri Lankan Tamils. Initially, bullock carts were utilized for daily transportation and agricultural activities; however, over time, they evolved into a rural sport integrated with village festivals and celebrations. This sport is regarded as a cultural event that manifests heroism, a competitive spirit, and social unity. The objective of this study is to examine the historical development, socio-cultural significance, and contemporary status of bullock cart racing as one of the traditional sports of Northern Sri Lankan Tamils. The hypothesis posits that bullock cart racing serves as a vital traditional sport reflecting the rural cultural identity and social cohesion of the Northern Sri Lankan Tamil community. Primary and secondary data were utilized for this research. Primary data were collected through field observations and interviews with relevant individuals. This historical and descriptive study also incorporates secondary data such as literature and research articles in both Tamil and English. In conclusion, while bullock cart racing is deeply intertwined with the rural culture and traditional lifestyle of Northern Sri Lankan Tamils, it is noteworthy that modernization and social shifts are bringing significant changes to its practice.
