Human life is fundamentally centered on economics. Indeed, it is the economy that determines the various circumstances and contexts of human existence. In this regard, Balakumaran’s novels illuminate the economic standing and background of women within the social fabric where men and women coexist. Through subtle and nuanced evidence, Balakumaran illustrates how women—whether highly educated professionals holding prestigious positions, those without formal education, or those engaged in domestic life—navigate their lives from an economic perspective. Women constitute an integral part of society; they must attain economic self-sufficiency, for only then can their lives be secure and ensure a dignified social existence. Specifically, by focusing on characters drawn from the middle class, the author has poignantly and profoundly chronicled economic struggles, the pursuit of financial independence, and the myriad challenges that arise from material deprivation.
