Anangavisalanai's Dream in Udayanakumara Kavyam

Abstract

The purpose of this research article is to compare and examine the dream of Anangavisalanai, which occurs in the Udayanakumara Kavyam, on the basis of Carl Gustav Jung's psychological theory. According to Jung, dreams serve as symbolic expressions of the unconscious mind. Based on this theory, the symbols occurring in Anangavisalanai's dream—such as the lion cub, cave, silver mountain, pearl necklace, flower garland, and the earthly world—are explained from a psychological perspective. Specifically, the lion cub is analyzed as a symbol of the animus, the cave as a symbol of the unconscious mind, the silver mountain as a symbol of elevation and life transformation, and the pearl necklace and flower garland as symbols of married life and feminine identity. Furthermore, it is explained that this dream serves as a symbolic expression of Anangavisalanai's future life, mental preparation, and inner psychological growth. Through this, this study demonstrates that dreams appearing in Tamil epics go beyond just predicting the future and serve as a literary technique that reveals the inner world and psychological state of the characters.
