Tamil in the Era of Algorithms: Integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence in Language Teaching for Engineering Students

Abstract

This paper explores how Generative AI can be integrated as a supplementary tool to enhance Tamil language instruction for engineering students, addressing key challenges such as English-medium dominance, uneven student proficiency, a lack of modern learning materials, and low engagement. It examines AI’s practical applications across vocabulary, grammar, translation, communication skills, and Technical Tamil, while critically addressing risks like AI hallucinations, linguistic bias, academic integrity, and digital inequality. Ultimately, the study advocates for ethical, outcome-based, and context-sensitive pedagogical frameworks that leverage AI to expand Tamil’s presence in technical fields without sacrificing the cultural and intellectual depth of language learning.
