Abstract

Literature helps to portray the lives of people and their culture. Various types of literature have emerged in the Tamil language according to the needs of the time. There are many types of literature in the Tamil literary field such as poetry, short stories, novels. Among these, short story literature has gained uniqueness. The adoption of the short story form in Tamil literature during the twentieth century was catalyzed by European literary influence. Its growth was substantially supported by key periodicals, including Manikodi and Ananda Vikatan, which provided crucial platforms for publication. This encouraged the rise of many Tamil short story writers who embraced modernist perspectives. Following the tradition established by the Manikodi writers, a similar wave of short story authors gained prominence in the 1980s. Among these, S. Ramakrishnan stands out; his works are specifically characterized by their focus on reflecting the current social realities and experiences of the people. In particular, the female characters he portrayed are unique. This research article aims to analyse such female characters based on psychological theory and explain the factors behind their behaviour.
