Abstract

The Thiruvalavayudaiyar Thiruvilayadal Puranam is the first Thiruvilayadal Puranam to appear in Tamil in the history of ancient literature. This book, which has various special names such as Vembattrar Thiruvilayadal, Aadi Thiruvilayadal Puranam, Pazhaya Thiruvilayadal, and Nambi Thiruvilaiyadal, contains 1,753 Vritta songs. This article is designed to analyze and explain the method of studying and the composition of the Kali Vrittams contained in this book, which was composed by Perumpatrapuliyur Nambi, based on the Vritta Paviyal. By dissecting the rhythmic nuances, metrical variations, and structural patterns within these verses, the study highlights how Nambi expertly adapted traditional prosodic norms to enhance the narrative's emotional and devotional depth. Furthermore, this research underscores the pivotal role of Kali Vrittams in bridging classical Tamil poetic forms with devotional literature, offering valuable insights for scholars of Tamil prosody (Yaappu) and medieval literary traditions.
