Abstract
The ancient Tamils traded with Greece and Rome through western ports, and with China, Java and other countries through eastern ports. It continues from the Sangam age. The Manimekalai points to trade relations between China and Java via eastern ports. Also it reveals the spread of Buddhist ethics with trade. Commerce of Manimegalai is continue from the Sangam commerce and spreading of Buddhism.
பழந்தமிழர்கள் மேலைக் கடற்கரைத் துறைமுகங்களின் வழியாக, கிரேக்கம், ரோம் முதலிய நாடுகளுக்கும் கீழைக்கடற்கரைத் துறைமுகங்களின் வழியாக சீனா, சாவகம் போன்ற பல்வேறு நாடுகளுக்குமிடையே வாணிகம் செய்தனர். சங்ககாலம் முதற்கொண்டு இது தொடர்கிறது. அந்தவகையில் மணிமேகலை கீழைக்கடற்கரைத் துறைமுகங்களில் இருந்து சீனா, சாவகம் முதலிய நாடுகளிடையே நடைபெற்ற வாணிகத் தொடர்பைக் குறிப்பிடுகிறது. இந்த வணிகத்துடன் சேர்ந்து பௌத்த சமய அறநெறியின் பரவலாக்கத்தையும் மணிமேகலை குறிப்பிடுகிறது. அதாவது மணிமேகலை முன்வைக்கும் வணிகம் பௌத்த அறத்தின்வழிப்பட்டதாக அமைகிறது. சங்ககால வணிகத்தின் தொடர்ச்சியாகவும் பௌத்த சமயநெறியின் பரவலாக்க நோக்கிலும் மணிமேகலையின் வணிகம் அமைகிறது.
