Ramayana Principles and the Path of Devotion as Depicted by Thirumangai Azhwar in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham

Abstract

In the history of Tamil Bhakti literature, particularly within the Vaishnava tradition, the contributions of the twelve Azhwars are unparalleled. Among them, Thirumangai Azhwar—who is chronologically the last of the Azhwars and the most prolific in terms of verse count—praised and propagated the glory of Lord Vishnu's incarnations and various Divya Desams through his hymns. In his works, the Rama Avatar is presented not merely as a historical event or a mythological story, but as a philosophical guide for the spiritual journey of devotees. Driven by his immense love for Lord Rama, Thirumangai Azhwar composed 216 verses in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham detailing the excellence of the Rama incarnation. This paper meticulously explores how Ramayana themes are interwoven throughout his six prabandhams, including the Periya Thirumozhi, and how he portrays Rama as the humblest among the humble yet the bravest among warriors. Additionally, this research illuminates the Azhwar's unique experience of perceiving the Archa (iconic) forms of deities in Divya Desams as Lord Rama himself and examines the philosophy of Saranagathi (total surrender) embedded in his verses.

தமிழ் பக்தி இலக்கிய வரலாற்றில், குறிப்பாக வைணவ நெறியில், பன்னிரு ஆழ்வார்களின் பங்களிப்பு ஈடு இணையற்றது. இவர்களில் காலத்தால் இறுதியானவராகவும், பாசுரங்களின் எண்ணிக்கையில் முதன்மையானவராகவும் விளங்கும் திருமங்கையாழ்வார், திருமாலின் பன்னிரு அவதாரங்களையும், பல்வேறு திவ்விய தேசங்களையும் தமது பாசுரங்கள் வழியாகப் போற்றிப் பரவியுள்ளார். இவருடைய படைப்புகளில் இராம அவதாரம் என்பது வெறும் வரலாற்று நிகழ்வாகவோ அல்லது புராணக் கதையாகவோ மட்டும் அன்றி, அடியவர்களின் ஆன்மீகப் பயணத்திற்கு வழிகாட்டும் ஒரு தத்துவச் சான்றாக முன்வைக்கப்படுகிறது. திருமங்கையாழ்வார் இராமபிரான் மீது கொண்ட பேரன்பின் காரணமாக, நாலாயிர திவ்வியப் பிரபந்தத்தில் 216 பாசுரங்களில் இராமவதாரச் சிறப்புகளை விரிவாகப் பாடியுள்ளார். இக்கட்டுரை, திருமங்கையாழ்வாரின் 'பெரிய திருமொழி' உள்ளிட்ட ஆறு பிரபந்தங்களில் இராமாயணக் கருத்துக்கள் எவ்வாறு விரவிக்கிடக்கின்றன என்பதையும், அவர் காட்டும் இராமன் எங்ஙனம் எளியவர்க்கும் எளியவனாகவும், வீரர்களுக்கெல்லாம் வீரனாகவும் திகழ்கின்றான் என்பதையும் நுணுக்கமாக ஆராய்கிறது. மேலும், திவ்விய தேசங்களில் அர்ச்சாவதார ரூபத்தில் விளங்கும் இறைவனை இராமனாகவே கண்டு ஆழ்வார் அனுபவித்த முறையையும், அவரது பாசுரங்களில் பொதிந்துள்ள சரணாகதித் தத்துவத்தையும் இந்த ஆய்வு விரிவாகப் புலப்படுத்துகிறது.
