Abstract

Among the literatures of the world, Sangam Literature stands out as a magnificent testament to the culture and civilization of the Tamil people. These Sangam poems beautifully illustrate the codes of conduct (ozhukkam) associated with the five types of landscapes (Thinai).

As defined by Tolkappiyar in the context of "Anbin Ainthinai" (The five landscapes of love), the life of the Sangam people flourished through the framework of the three components:

• Muthalporul (Primary elements: Time and Space)
• Karuporul (Regional elements: Flora, fauna, deities, etc.)
• Uripporul (Human emotions and conduct)

The heroes and heroines depicted in these "Akam" (interior/love) poems lived their lives adhering to a refined civilizational conduct. A key element of this is Ullurai (implied metaphor) and Iraichi (suggestive meaning). Through the use of regional elements (Karuporul), the concept of Iraichi serves to subtly describe the behavior and conduct of the hero. This article explores the presence and significance of Iraichi within Sangam Akam literature.
