Mullaippattu, which contains the fewest lines among the works in the Pattuppattu (Ten Idylls) collection of Sangam literature, is centered on the Agham (internal/love) tradition of patient waiting (kaathiruthal). However, the historical, social, religious, and cultural data embedded within its background are immense. This research paper undertakes a detailed analysis of the ancient Tamils' family structure, hospitality, virtue of chastity (karpu neri), life intertwined with nature, worship of Mayon (Vishnu), the tradition of listening to Viritchi (good omens/words), and military encampment structures as revealed through Mullaippattu.
Furthermore, it analyzes social elements such as the involvement of foreigners like the Yavanas and Mlecchas in war camps, women lighting statues/lamps (Paavai Vilakku), and Sanskrit-speaking mahouts training elephants, alongside the global trade and political connections of the Tamils understood through these aspects. This study establishes that Mullaippattu serves as a historical treasure trove reflecting the high degree of civilization among the people of the Sangam era.
