Creative Literary Personality in the Prose Works of Vallalar

Abstract

Arutprakasa Vallalar, who propagated the philosophy of Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga to the world, occupies a distinguished place in the history of Tamil literature. He was not only an eminent poet but also an accomplished prose writer. Vallalar's prose works transcend the boundaries of religious expository literature and stand as remarkable literary creations that eloquently articulate the ideals of humanitarianism, compassion for all living beings, equality, moral discipline, and social reform. This paper examines the distinctive features of his prose, including its linguistic style, conceptual framework, narrative technique, social responsibility, spiritual humanism, the philosophy of Jeevakarunyam (compassion towards all life), and its literary devices. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that Vallalar's prose continues to offer meaningful guidance in addressing contemporary issues such as humanitarian values, religious harmony, environmental consciousness, and universal brotherhood, thereby affirming its enduring relevance.
